Newington man dies in Effingham County crash

A 59-year-old Newington man died May 7 when his pickup truck was broadsided by a tractor trailer as he tried to cross Highway 21 at Clyo-Kildare Road, just south of Newington in Effingham County.
George “Bug” Perry Jr., of Pitts Road, died in the accident at about 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The driver of the tractor trailer, Randolph Wayne Bradley of Savannah, was taken to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah where he remained in serious condition Tuesday night.
Bradley’s tractor trailer was traveling in the right southbound lane of Highway 21 when it struck Perry’s pickup truck as he tried to cross the highway at Clyo-Kildare Road, the Georgia State Patrol said. The semi-truck overturned.
The southbound lanes of Highway 21 were closed for four-and-a-half hours. The accident is under investigation and no charges had been filed, the State Patrol said Tuesday.
Perry, a native of Effingham County, worked for many years in logging. Survivors include his wife, Melba; five daughters; one stepdaughter; two sons; and 10 grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Smalls Funeral Home Chapel in Guyton. The funeral is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Royal Temple Holiness Church in Guyton, with burial at Bethel AME Church Cemetery.
