January teacher supplements nixed

Tuesday evening the school board voted to not provide county educators with a January supplement for the 2009-2010 school.
The board then voted to change the supplement policy to allow the members more flexibility on whether supplements will be provided to teachers in the future.
This latitude, board members say, may be benefit during the tough economic times.
The newly approved policy reads: “The salary paid to professional personnel will be the amount shown on the salary schedule adopted annually by the board. The schedule is based on the state certificate held and the number of years of experience as approved by the local system plus local supplements if authorized and approved by the board.”
The board said this was a decision that must be made to cut expenses.
“The teachers are appreciated,” said board member Tom Avret.
The board already has begun reduction-in-force measures and will move the Performance Learning Center to the high school.
Superintendent Whit Myers said more cuts are expected.
