Driver accused of having gun on school bus

A Screven County school bus driver has been accused of having a gun on board a school bus and been put on administrative leave pending further disciplinary action.

James Atkins Jr., 46, of Savannah Highway, was arrested April 16 and will be charged with possession of a firearm on school grounds, said Cpl. Brett Dickerson, spokesman for the Screven County Sheriff’s Department.

“The incident is still under investigation by law enforcement,” said School Superintendent Whit Myers. “He is on administrative leave until further action would be appropriate. … Any decision to possibly terminate would be made by the board of education.”

Atkins had completed his route and returned to his house with only his granddaughter on board the bus when he got in an argument with a man who was waiting for him at his house.

The reason for the argument was unclear. Video tape from the bus showed Atkins pulling the gun, the sheriff’s report said. The argument ended with no one seriously injured.
