Oliver post office closing this month

Later this month the U.S. Post Office in Oliver will cease operation as its services are moved to the Newington post office.

The last day for the Oliver location will be April 17 as the U.S. Postal Service could not reach a suitable agreement with the person who has leased the property

to the post service. All services, including post office boxes, will be moved to Newington.

A total of 94 post office boxes are located in the Oliver post office, said Michael Miles with U.S. Postal Service corporate communications, based out of Atlanta.

“It is not unusual for the cost of a lease to go up, but the postal service believed this amount was too much,” said Miles, commenting on behalf of the post office, did not have a record of the difference between the old lease amount and the new one.

Miles said a letter of explanation was sent early this month to the Oliver customers affected. Residents’ questions about the change can be directed to the postmaster at the office in Newington at

The population of Oliver, at the time of the 2000 census, was 253 of the county total of 15,374.

Some Oliver residents, those who wish to do so, may opt to have street delivery now instead, Miles said.

“Change is difficult,” said Miles of the seven-minute and 5.28-mile post office box move to Newington. “We would like the customers to know that this is not something we had planned to do. We are not lessening any services to them.

“We have 3,300 post offices in the state and it is not unusual at all to have more than one town’s post office boxes housed at one place,” Miles said.

Although the Oliver customers’ post office boxes later will be in Newington, the residents will retain their Oliver address.

Miles said a meeting is planned for Thursday afternoon with a district postal service representative and Oliver Mayor Justine Brown.

A telephone message left at Brown’s residence Tuesday afternoon was not immediately returned.

The postal service also has offices in Sylvania, Dover and Rocky Ford. Miles said he is not aware of either other proposed post office closings or relocations.

“We look at leases on a case-by-case basis,” Miles said.
