Resident earns right to call herself an 'American'

Sylvania resident and Russia native Natalia Buie became a U.S. citizen in a ceremony in Atlanta on Feb. 26.

“I am just so excited and so proud to be a citizen of the United States of America, the greatest country in the world,” said Buie, 36, who works at Donna’s Bakery & Deli. She has lived in the United States for 10 years.

Buie applied for citizenship and about four months later, she traveled to Atlanta to take the citizenship test. She had studied a list of 100 civics questions, along with their answers. The test consisted of 10 of those questions.

She waited several hours while the test was graded and was sworn in the same day.

“It means a lot for me,” she said. “My life completely changed. I feel more free. That’s a day I’ve been waiting for a long, long time.” She said her 8-year-old son Alex helped her study for the exam.

She was among 121 people from 46 countries who were sworn in that day.
