Sylvanian sentenced 6 years for possession of child porn

A Sylvania man has pleaded guilty to possession of child porn and been sentenced to six years and 10 months in federal prison, followed by 15 years supervised release.

Charles Michael Buie, 44, pleaded guilty on Nov. 25 and was sentenced on Feb. 19 by U.S. District Judge B. Avant Edenfield in Statesboro. He is scheduled to report to the federal prison in Estill, S.C., on March 19.

As part of the guilty plea, Buie gave up his right to appeal. He was fined $3,600 and, after completing his federal prison sentence, will be under the supervision of the U.S. Probation Office for 15 years. He must complete a long list of requirements, including: register as a sex offender, provide a DNA sample, not use or possess a firearm, submit to random drug and polygraph tests and not have a computer or go online.

Sylvania Police Lt. Tony Taylor said Buie’s wife notified police about child porn on Buie’s home computer. Investigators from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation found 44 movies and 17 still photos of child porn. One of the movies was 17 minutes long.

Buie, who most recently worked in the meat department of Moat’s supermarket, has been employed most of his life and had no criminal record, which Edenfield took into consideration during sentencing. The possession of child porn charge carried a sentence range of six years and six months on the low end and, on the high end, eight years and one month in prison.

“He has been contrite, remorseful and has cooperated with officials,” Buie’s attorney, Hugh McCullough of Glennville, said in court. He said Buie “was going through a very unfortunate period in his life” – a divorce and custody battle, and that he was under stress that resulted in a suicide attempt.

Since then, Buie has been going through counseling for sex offenders and for the suicide attempt, McCullough said.

Penalties are stiff for viewing child pornography, said Ed Sutcliff, FBI special agent in Statesboro, who worked the case. “This guy’s feeding on that market (for child porn), creating a demand,” Sutcliff said.
