Man fatally shot at Spaceship Lounge; one charged with murder

A Millen man has been charged with murder in the shooting death of a Girard man at the Spaceship Lounge in Screven County Sunday.

Brandon Donnell Lake, 24, of Jones Plantation Road in Millen, was charged with murder in the death of Jermaine Micquell Scurry, 20, of Girard, said Screven County Sheriff Mike Kile.

Authorities got a call about a shooting at the private club on Burton’s Ferry Road at about 1:30 a.m., according to an incident report filed at the sheriff’s department. “Calls about shots being fired when the club is letting out are not infrequent,” said Cpl. Brett Dickerson.

Deputies went to the club and learned from people there that the shooters had fled in a white Monte Carlo. They notified area police to look out for the vehicle. Within minutes, a Sylvania police officer and a Georgia State Patrol trooper found the car, with two men inside.

Lake was driving and his passenger was Byron Demont Milton, 25, of Josh Court in Millen. The officers charged Lake with driving under the influence and Milton with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

While the pair were being stopped and charged, dispatch got a call saying that someone had been shot during the gunfire at the club earlier. Deputies returned to the club and discovered that Scurry had been shot and killed.

What prompted the shooting was unclear. Kile referred questions to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which is handing the case and releasing no details while the probe continues.

Kile did say the shooting was not accidental.

The murder was the first this year in Screven County, which had two murders in 2008 – one the result of a domestic dispute and the other drug-related, the sheriff said. “We don’t like murder,” said Kile said. “It’s bad for the community. It gives us a bad name.”

Scurry’s relatives include a sister and a brother in Sylvania – Tocarro Morgan and Travis Barnes.
