Got a dollar in your pocket? If so, go shopping downtown

A locally owned dollar store – not a franchise or part of a chain – is slated to open Feb. 6 in downtown Sylvania.

Dollar City will open in 1,600 square feet of space near Moat’s IGA grocery store. Most of the store’s products will cost $1, but some will cost more than $1, said Knut Ruud, who will operate the store along with his wife, Gail.

The store will be similar to one the couple opened in Statesboro on Dec. 5, next to Bernard’s Jewelers.

The store will stock a variety of items, including household cleaning aids, jewelry, beverages, some clothing, gift items, toiletries, hair accessories, baby items and toys. The business will get new inventory almost every two weeks, enticing customers to visit often, Rudd said.

An example of the store’s products would be a trio of Glade candles, which Ruud sells for $3.95. He said the same product sells for $13 at Wal-Mart.

The business model calls for buying wholesale and selling high volume with slim margins. He said the Statesboro store has had about 60 customers per day.

“I heard some months back that the only business that will survive a bad economy is a dollar store,” Ruud said.

At the beginning, the store will be staffed with family members, he said. Rudd said he may hire one or two people when the store is established.

The couple, who live in Statesboro, said they are new to retail and are learning as they go. Gail Ruud said she lived in Sylvania for 40 years and retired from Torrington.

They said they have a one-year lease on the space and are hoping customers will be able to find enough parking spaces downtown.

“We feel like Sylvania is such an old, historic town,” Ruud said. “There’s a lot of activity uptown, especially on the weekends. It could be a good spot for us.”

The store will be open from to Monday through Friday; Saturday; and Sunday.
