First Byline:
G.G. Rigsby

A last-minute plea for people to take a four-hour test before the end of the year worked, enabling Screven County to earn status as a “Work Ready” community.
Screven is among 36 counties to earn the designation, part of a state program meant to help workers market themselves and to show an area has an able workforce.
More than 300 workers earned certification in Screven County by taking the test that measures math skills, reading for information and locating information.

Former Effingham County Rebel, North Carolina State Wolfpack member and Washington Redskin Greg Manior was named the new head football coach of the Screven County High School Gamecocks last week.
Having held a similar position at South Effingham High School for the past four seasons, Manior will take over the duties at SCHS as soon as details can be worked out between the two school systems.

There's snow place like Sylvania

First Byline:
G.G. Rigsby

The first significant accumulation of snow in Screven County in 37 years saw snowmen dotting the landscape, people of all ages engaging in snowball fights and cameras working overtime.
Utility crews also worked around the clock to trim limbs from power lines and restore power as 4.5 inches of snow fell from about 5:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 12, through 7 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 13.
The last significant accumulation of snow in the county was 8 to 14 inches on Feb. 10 and Feb. 11, 1973, with the amount varying in different parts of the county, the Screven County News reported.

School calendar year retooled down 10 days

First Byline:
Enoch Autry

The cuts of state dollars for public education and the expected additional reductions later this year has forced public school systems statewide to be creative with school calendars.
Screven County also plans to tweak its calendar for the upcoming 2010-2011 year as a way of saving its limited funds.
Monday evening the school board tentatively approved a calendar for next year that knocks off five days at the start of the term and five days off at the conclusion. The school year for students would be 170 days instead of the traditional 180.

Screven County BOE: No uniforms next year

First Byline:
Enoch Autry

Students will not be required to wear school uniforms in Screven County next year, but the current dress code is expected to have its belt tightened more.
That was the decree announced by the administration at the monthly school board meeting Monday after just five months ago saying a version of a school uniform would be the rule from pre-kindergarten students to high school seniors.
The reason for the change of mind, administrators say, was because of the input received from the community upon the board’s declaration that a uniform format was coming.

‘Don’t quit’-themed banquet

First Byline:
Enoch Autry

Ronda Rich is a book author. She pens columns for newspapers and she makes about 80 appearances throughout the nation for speaking engagements a year.
But the message Rich had for Screven County Feb. 4 at the annual chamber of commerce banquet was one well-intended for business leaders and citizens the like.
Rich was a working journalist in 1989 when Darrell Waltrip miraculously made the last seven trips around the Daytona 500 oval on just a few drips and fumes of gasoline.
