After breezing through their cross over region schedule during the regular season, the SCHS Lady Gamecocks of Roy Cooper found the going a lot tougher in the Region 3AA Tournament last week as they emerged with a number four seeding and a trip to Macon tomorrow night to face the Region 4AA champion Northeast Macon Lady Raiders. Boys hoops stun Laney, East Laurens; claim region runner-up

Pulling off two of their biggest upsets ever, overcoming what has been a less than stellar basketball history in the process, the SCHS Gamecocks of Brent Anderson claimed their most significant wins in two decades with stunning upsets of #1 seeded (3AA-A) Laney 69-61 and #2 seeded (3AA-B) East Laurens 89-83 in the quarterfinals and semifinals respectively of the Region 3AA tournament. Kilpatrick takes third at state again

Becoming the most successful Gamecock at the state level ever, senior Charles Kilpatrick claimed the top spot in the consolation bracket to claim a third place statewide finish in the 152 pound class.  The state finals, combining the top 16 from each weight class in the state, took place at the Gwinnett Arena on February 19-21.  Kilpatrick also finished third in the same class a year ago.

Region title will come another year

Forget the one-sided loss to Dublin’s awesome and number one ranked Irish in Saturday night’s region title matchup, the 2008-09 SCHS Gamecock basketball team of Brent Anderson assured its place in local history alongside Harold Lee Scott’s 1988-89 region championship team last week. This edition of the Red and White may not make it to the Final Four and come within one shot of a state championship bout, but they will be remembered as the team that refused to quit believing in themselves.

With the Lady Gamecock basketball team of Roy Cooper playing Dublin this Feb. 19 afternoon at Southeast Bulloch for a berth in the Class AA state playoffs and seniors James Crews and Charles Kilpatrick and junior Terrell Roberts wrestling in the state finals also beginning today at the Gwinnett Civic Center, there is a hint that the indoor sports are wrapping up and it is time for spring sports.

Gamecocks take the sting out of SEB, 62-47

Still with an outside chance to move into third place in the 3AA-A standings and avoid an early matchup with number one Dublin, the SCHS Gamecocks blew to an early lead and never let their hosts get back into the contest as the Roosters downed the Southeast Bulloch Yellow Jackets 62-47 Friday night in Brooklet.

The team next returns to action Friday night when 3AA-B foe Dodge County comes to the Harold Lee Scott Gymnasium. On Saturday, the Red and White will travel to Pembroke to face Bryan County and the regular season will expire on Friday, Jan. 13, when Jeffco comes to town.

Lady Gamecocks begin preparation for region tourney

A No. 2 seed in their subregion assured, the SCHS Lady Gamecocks of Roy Cooper will begin tweaking their lineup and strategy for the upcoming 3AA tournament on Feb. 17-21 at Southeast Bulloch High School.

With a 65-56 loss to the sixth ranked Lady Wildcats in Augusta on Jan. 27, the then tenth-ranked locals saw their chances of a subregion title evaporate in a barrage of three-pointers by their hosts.

Wrestlers hit mats in area this weekend

With another regular season under their belts, the SCHS Gamecock wrestling team of Mike Ward will hit the mats at the Toombs County Middle School tomorrow and Saturday as they participate in the Area Traditional Tournament on Friday and Saturday.
